How the conversion works

Every place keeps its clocks at an offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), and many change that offset for part of the year. The converter turns your time into a single moment using the first place’s offset on that date, then reads the clock in the second place at the same moment, so the date can roll over and daylight saving is always the one in force that day.

The offsets come from the IANA tz database, the public record of every region’s clock rules that phones and computers use. The worked examples and tables on these pages use version 2026c; the live clocks use the copy in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the converter handle daylight saving time?

It works out the offset of each place on the date you pick, from the IANA tz database your browser carries, so a 9:00 am meeting in July uses summer time and one in January uses winter time. The hour skipped when clocks go forward is read with the offset from before the change.

Why do the converter’s answers change when I pick another date?

Because many places move their clocks for part of the year, and not on the same dates. New York and London change on different Sundays in March and in late October or early November, so for a few weeks they are 4 hours apart instead of 5.

Can I convert to more than one place at once?

Yes. The converter shows a few other cities at the same moment beside the answer, and the world clock shows any list of cities you choose, live, with a link that keeps your list.

Is EST the same as Eastern Time?

Not quite. EST is Eastern Standard Time, UTC−5, used in winter; in summer the same clocks show EDT, UTC−4. People often say EST all year, so these pages convert from what clocks in New York actually show on your date.
