How to convert IST to GST

Here IST means India Standard Time, UTC+5:30 all year; GST means Gulf Standard Time, UTC+4 all year. So GST is 1 h 30 min behind IST all year. Two 9-to-5 working days overlap by 6 h 30 min all year.

IST to GST is the sum families in India do before calling relatives in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Muscat, and the one that Indian companies with Gulf clients use to find a meeting slot. Dubai is only 1 h 30 min behind, so nearly the whole Indian working day falls inside Gulf office hours: from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm IST both sides are at work.

Because the gap is fixed, the thing to remember is the direction: Dubai is behind, so subtract. A meeting at 10:00 am in India is 8:30 am in Dubai, which may be before someone there reaches their desk, while a late Indian evening of 10:00 pm is only 8:30 pm in Dubai, often a good hour to catch someone after their working day. Oman keeps the same clock as the UAE, so the sum is the same for Muscat.

Rule of thumb: Subtract 1½ hours from Indian time: 6:00 pm IST is 4:30 pm in Dubai, and 10:00 pm IST is 8:30 pm there.

GST = IST −1:30

Meeting planner: best times for IST and GST

The easiest meetings fall where both working days overlap, shaded dark on the bar. The lighter shading is still between 7 am and 9 pm on both clocks, so one side starts early or stays late.

All year: IST and GST

  • Both at work: 10:30 am to 5:00 pm IST is 9:00 am to 3:30 pm GST (6 h 30 min).
  • Early or late for one side: 8:30 am to 10:30 am IST is 7:00 am to 9:00 am GST (2 h); 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm IST is 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm GST (4 h).
