How this works

Method

Here IST means India Standard Time, UTC+5:30 all year; PST means Pacific Time, PST (UTC−8) in its winter and PDT (UTC−7) in its summer, as kept in Los Angeles. So PST is 13 h 30 min behind IST, and PDT is 12 h 30 min behind. Two 9-to-5 working days do not overlap at all, so one side has to start early or stay late. Full method

How to convert IST to PST

Here IST means India Standard Time, UTC+5:30 all year; PST means Pacific Time, PST (UTC−8) in its winter and PDT (UTC−7) in its summer, as kept in Los Angeles. So PST is 13 h 30 min behind IST, and PDT is 12 h 30 min behind. Two 9-to-5 working days do not overlap at all, so one side has to start early or stay late.

This direction is mostly searched from India: by people who support customers or teams in Silicon Valley, Seattle or Los Angeles, by students applying to US universities with Pacific deadlines, and by anyone with relatives on the West Coast. Because India is so far ahead, a US working day of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Pacific falls between late evening and early morning in India, which is why so much India–US collaboration happens on evening or night shifts.

The number to take away changes twice a year even though nothing changes in India. When California moves its clocks forward in March, a 9:00 pm call in Delhi lands at 8:30 am instead of 7:30 am in San Francisco; when it falls back in November, the same call is an hour earlier again. A deadline written as “11:59 pm PT” on a US website is the Pacific clock of that day, so convert it on the actual date before you plan your night.

Rule of thumb: Subtract 12½ hours from Indian time in summer (13½ in winter) and step back one calendar day if the result passes midnight: 10:00 pm IST is 9:30 am PDT the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 9 am IST in PST?

In January, 9:00 am IST is 7:30 pm PST the day before. In July, 9:00 am IST is 8:30 pm PDT the day before.

What time is 9 pm IST in PST?

In winter, when California is on PST, 9:00 pm in India is 7:30 am the same day in Los Angeles. In summer (PDT) it is 8:30 am. Either way it is the US morning of the same date, because India is half a day ahead.

A US deadline says 11:59 pm PT. When is that in India?

It is the next day in India: 12:29 pm IST when the deadline falls in summer (PDT), or 1:29 pm IST in winter (PST). Submitting by the morning after the US date in India keeps you safe in both seasons.

Why does my US meeting move by an hour in March and November?

India keeps the same time all year, but California springs forward on the second Sunday in March and falls back on the first Sunday in November. A meeting fixed on Pacific time therefore shifts one hour earlier or later on the Indian clock.
