India’s time zone
India keeps India Standard Time (IST), UTC+5:30, all year round: its clocks do not change for summer. Phones and computers set India’s clocks from the Asia/Kolkata zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.
All of India keeps one clock, India Standard Time, UTC+5:30, from Gujarat in the west to Arunachal Pradesh in the east, a span of almost 30 degrees of longitude. The half hour dates from 1 January 1906, when the railways and telegraphs switched from Madras time to UTC+5:30. Cities such as Bombay (Mumbai) and Calcutta (Kolkata) kept their own local times for decades longer, a dispute the press called the “Battle of the Clocks”.
India has not changed its clocks since the Second World War, when it ran an hour ahead for most of the years from late 1941 to 15 October 1945. One time for the whole country means the sun rises close to two hours earlier in the north-east than in the far west. The zone’s tz database name changed from Asia/Calcutta to Asia/Kolkata; the old name still works as an alias.

Frequently Asked Questions
What time zone is India in?
India is on India Standard Time (IST), UTC+5:30, all year. Its tz database zone is Asia/Kolkata.
Why is India 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC?
IST was chosen as a compromise in the middle of the country rather than on a whole-hour line. The railways adopted it in 1906, and it has been India’s single time zone since 1945.
Does India have more than one time zone?
No. The whole country, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep, keeps IST (UTC+5:30) with no daylight saving time.
Is IST the same in India and Ireland?
No. India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year; Irish Standard Time is UTC+1, used in Ireland in summer. Check the country when an invite just says IST.
