London’s time zone
London keeps UK time: GMT (UTC+0) for the colder months and BST (UTC+1) while daylight saving is on. In 2027 the clocks go forward on Sunday 28 March and back again on Sunday 31 October. Phones and computers set London’s clocks from the Europe/London zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.
London gave the world its reference time: Greenwich Mean Time, measured at the Royal Observatory, became Britain’s legal time and later the basis of the world’s time zones. Today UTC, kept by atomic clocks, has replaced GMT for science, but the UK still calls its winter time GMT and its summer time British Summer Time.
The UK has experimented more than most. In the Second World War it ran British Double Summer Time, two hours ahead of GMT, in several summers from 1941 to 1945, and again in 1947. From 27 October 1968 to 31 October 1971 it tried keeping summer time all year as “British Standard Time”, then went back to changing clocks. Since 1996 the UK has changed on the last Sundays of March and October, at the same instant as the European Union, so London stays one hour behind Paris and Berlin all year.
