Due Date Calculator

Your estimated due date from your last period, a conception date, an IVF transfer or a dating scan, with the weeks most babies actually arrive in and how far along you are today.

v2026.10.13

Key facts

  • By convention a due date is 280 days (40 weeks) after the first day of the last period, which assumes a 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14.

How sure is this date? What each method can and can’t tell you

From a last period, the date is as good as two things: remembering the first day, and ovulation coming when the average says. ACOG notes that only about half of people recall the date accurately, and an early scan often moves it by a few days.

Whatever the method, babies keep their own schedule: in a study of 18,708 births after labour started on its own, about 1 in 20 arrived on the due date and two in three within a week of it (Apr 17 – May 1 here).

How this works

Method

A due date is 280 days after the first day of the last period, moved by the days the cycle is longer or shorter than 28; 266 days after conception; 263 or 261 days after a day-3 or day-5 IVF transfer; or the scan date plus the days the scan left to 40 weeks. Weeks count from 280 days before the due date, with ACOG’s trimester and term boundaries. The range shown is the term window, 37 to 42 weeks.

How it’s tested

17 worked examples for this page are checked by automated tests before every release: given the inputs, the tool must show the expected answer.

Why a due date is really a range

A due date is a convention, not a prediction to the day. Clinicians count 280 days from the first day of the last period because, on average, ovulation comes about two weeks after a period starts and a pregnancy lasts about 38 weeks from there. The calculator does the same sum, then moves the date by the days your cycle is longer or shorter than 28, because ovulation sits about two weeks before the next period rather than on a fixed day 14.

Babies keep their own schedule. In an Australian study of 18,708 births where labour started on its own, 5% arrived on the estimated date and about two thirds within seven days of it. Even when the day of ovulation was measured with hormone tests, healthy pregnancies varied in length by 37 days (Jukic et al.). That is why the result shows the term window, from 37 weeks to the end of 41 weeks, as prominently as the date itself.

Which method to trust

An IVF transfer gives the most exact date, because the embryo’s age and the day it was placed are known. A dating scan in the first trimester comes next: measuring the embryo up to 13 weeks 6 days is accurate to about 5 to 7 days either way, and ACOG calls it the most accurate way to set or confirm the date. A known conception date is good when you tracked ovulation. The last period is the method everyone can use, but it depends on remembering the date and on ovulation happening when the average says; ACOG notes that only about half of people recall it accurately.

When an early scan and the last period disagree, the scan wins once the difference is bigger than the limits below. Your clinician makes that call and records one date for the whole pregnancy; if theirs differs from this page, plan with theirs.

When a scan changes the due date

ACOG Committee Opinion 700, Table 1: the scan’s date replaces the last-period date when they differ by more than this.

How the weeks are counted

Pregnancy weeks start on the first day of the last period, about two weeks before conception, so at “4 weeks” the embryo is about two weeks old. A scan or an IVF date is turned into the same count so every method speaks one language. The first trimester runs to the end of week 13, the second from 14 weeks to the end of 27, and the third from 28 weeks on. From 37 weeks a birth is called early term, from 39 full term, from 41 late term and from 42 postterm, the labels ACOG and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine use.

Your dates stay with you

Everything here is worked out in your browser. The dates you type are not sent anywhere, not saved and not put in the address bar, so they don’t end up in your history or in a link by accident. If you want to send someone your dates, Share asks first and shows you the link before anything goes. There are no accounts, no ads and no app to download, and closing the page clears it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a due date calculated?

Add 280 days to the first day of your last period: a period that started on Monday, January 11, 2027 gives Monday, October 18, 2027. If your cycle is usually longer or shorter than 28 days, move the date by the difference (a 32-day cycle gives Friday, October 22, 2027). From a conception date add 266 days; from an IVF transfer add 263 days for a day-3 embryo or 261 for a day-5 embryo.

How accurate is my due date?

Think of it as the middle of a window. Only about 1 in 20 babies arrive on the day itself, about two in three within a week of it, and most between 37 and 42 weeks. A date from an IVF transfer or an early scan is closer than one from a remembered period, but no method can say which day labour will start.

My scan gave a different due date. Which one is right?

Usually the scan’s. ACOG’s rule is to change the date when an early scan and the last period differ by more than 5 days before 9 weeks, 7 days up to 15 weeks 6 days, 10 days to 21 weeks 6 days, 14 days to 27 weeks 6 days and 21 days after that. Your clinician decides and keeps one date for the rest of the pregnancy. Enter the scan in “Scan or known date” to see the same timeline.

How do I work out a due date after IVF or a frozen embryo transfer?

Use the transfer date and the embryo’s age on that day: 263 days after a day-3 transfer, 261 days after a day-5 blastocyst transfer. It works the same for fresh and frozen transfers, because what matters is the embryo’s age when it was placed. Your fertility clinic will give you the date they use.

What if my cycles are irregular or I don’t know my last period?

Then the last-period method is a rough guess, because ovulation could have come much earlier or later than average. An early dating scan is the usual way to set the date in that case; once you have its result, enter the scan date and the age it gave.

Is anything I enter saved or sent?

No. The calculation runs on your device, nothing is stored, and your dates stay out of the address bar and analytics. A link with your dates exists only if you choose “With my values” in Share, and it tells you so before you send it.
