On a touch screen, tap to play or pause and drag to move the text. Most Bluetooth clickers and page turners send Page Up and Page Down or the arrow keys, so they work without set-up.

For a second monitor: the prompter goes full screen on one, the remote stays on the other. Both windows must be in this browser on this device.

How the teleprompter works

Paste or type a script and press Start. After the countdown the text scrolls up past the reading line, the band between the two markers, at the speed you set in words per minute. The prompter measures how tall your script is on this screen and divides it by the read time, so the pace stays the same at any text size or window width, and the last line arrives on time.

The prompter uses its own high-contrast colours (white on black unless you choose otherwise), whatever the site’s light or dark theme, and keeps the screen awake while it’s open. Lines you’ve already read fade towards the top so your eye stays on the reading line.

Tips for reading to camera

  • Put the reading line close to the camera lens (higher up the screen) so your eyes look nearly into it.
  • Shorter lines are easier to follow: widen the side margins on a big screen.
  • Mark pauses with a blank line, and write numbers the way you’ll say them.
  • Do one test read and adjust the speed with the arrow keys; it’s remembered for next time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this teleprompter free, and where is my script saved?

It is free, with no account. Scripts are saved only in this browser, on this device: nothing is uploaded and the text never goes into the page address. To keep a copy or move to another computer, use Backup & sync (linked in the footer).

How do I use it with a beam-splitter (glass) teleprompter rig?

Turn on Mirror (or press M) so the text reads the right way round in the reflection. If your screen sits upside down under the glass, turn on Flip (V) as well. Then press F or the fullscreen button so nothing else shows on the glass.

Can I use a presentation clicker, page turner or keyboard?

Yes. Space plays and pauses (so do B, the full stop and F5, which many clickers send). Page Up and Page Down, and the left and right arrows, jump back and forward. The up and down arrows (or + and −) change the speed, and [ and ] change the text size. Esc leaves fullscreen, and a second Esc closes the prompter.

How fast should a teleprompter scroll?

Conversational English runs at about 150 words a minute, so start a little below your usual pace (140 here), do a test read and adjust it with the arrow keys while it runs. The speed you settle on is remembered. The read time above the preview updates as you change it.

Can I control the prompter from another window?

Yes. “Remote control window” opens a small control panel in a second window of the same browser, handy when the prompter is full screen on a second monitor. The two windows talk directly on your device; nothing goes over the internet. Using a phone as the remote would need a server, so it isn’t available yet.

Can I open a page from the Markdown editor?

Yes. “From the Markdown editor” lists the pages saved in this browser’s Markdown editor and copies the one you pick into a new script as plain text (headings and paragraphs, without the formatting). Editing the script doesn’t change the page.

Does it scroll by following my voice?

Not yet. Speech recognition in Chrome sends your audio to Google’s servers, which would break the promise that nothing leaves your device. Voice-follow will come when it can run on your device.
