Setting a timer for any length

Type the minutes you need, or tap one of the common lengths, and press Start. Odd lengths work as well as round ones: 7 minutes for a sauna session, 12 for a frozen pizza, 90 for a film you mean to pause halfway. The page address keeps the length, so a link ending in ?m=7 opens a 7-minute timer ready to go, which makes a handy bookmark or something to send to whoever is running the same task.

The countdown is worked out from the moment you pressed Start rather than by counting ticks, so it stays accurate when you switch tabs or your screen dims. Pick the sound before you begin and test it at your usual volume; a timer that rings silently is no timer at all. For anything that must not be missed, such as medication, keep this tab open and the device awake, and set your phone’s own alarm too.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set a timer for a number of minutes that isn’t listed?

Type it into the minutes box and press Start. Any whole number of minutes works, and the link updates as you type, so you can bookmark it: an address ending in ?m=40 always opens a 40-minute timer, ready to start.

Does the timer keep going if I switch to another tab?

Yes. It measures from the moment you pressed Start, so the time left is right whenever you look back, and the sound is scheduled ahead so it rings on time. Keep the tab open, though: closing it stops the timer.

What happens when the time is up?

The sound you chose plays and the display shows that the time has run out. Press Stop to silence it, or Reset to load the same length again for another round. If you missed the moment, the display makes it clear the timer has finished.
