Quarter-hour uses
A quarter of an hour is the rest the American Optometric Association suggests after two hours of continuous computer work, on top of shorter look-away breaks. If you have been at a screen all morning, start this timer, step outside or do something with your hands, and come back when it rings with eyes that have had a chance to relax.
It also tames the jobs that expand without a limit: fifteen minutes of tidying before guests arrive, a batch of household admin, a pass through revision flashcards. Scrum teams hold their daily stand-up in the same length of time, and a countdown everyone can see keeps each update short. If two people share the slot, the display makes the 7½-minute handover easy to spot. A quarter-hour is also long enough for a cup of coffee away from the desk and short enough that nobody minds.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a break from the computer be?
The American Optometric Association suggests resting your eyes for 15 minutes after two hours of continuous computer use, and looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes in between. This timer covers the longer break.
How long is a daily stand-up meeting?
The Scrum Guide sets the Daily Scrum at 15 minutes, held at the same time and place each working day. A visible countdown keeps the round of updates brisk, and the ring gives a neutral signal to take longer discussions elsewhere.
Is 15 minutes 0.25 of an hour?
Yes. Fifteen minutes is a quarter of an hour, written 0.25 in decimal hours on a timesheet, and four of them make an hour. That is why quarter-hours are a common unit for billing time and booking short appointments.
