Forty-five minutes
Forty-five minutes is the length of each half of a football match: the Laws of the Game set two equal halves of 45 minutes, with a half-time interval of no more than 15. Coaches and parents running a match in the park often want the same shape, and a full-screen countdown on a phone at the side of the pitch does the job of a referee’s watch, minus the stoppage time.
Indoors, 45 minutes is a common lesson length and a comfortable block for deep work: long enough to get past the warm-up stage of a hard problem, and it still leaves room in the hour for a proper break. It also fits a yoga class, a long run, a practice exam paper or a cake in the oven. Use the + key if you need a little more, rather than restarting from zero.
- Law 7 of the IFAB Laws of the Game: a match lasts two equal halves of 45 minutes, and players are entitled to a half-time interval not exceeding 15 minutes. Source: IFAB Laws of the Game, Law 7: The duration of the match.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a half in football?
Under the IFAB Laws of the Game, a match is two equal halves of 45 minutes, with a half-time interval of no more than 15 minutes. The referee adds time lost to stoppages at the end of each half, so real halves often run past 45.
What is 45 minutes as a decimal of an hour?
0.75 hours, or three quarters of an hour. A timesheet that records decimals shows 0.75, and in hours and minutes it is 0:45. Four of these blocks make three hours.
Is 45 minutes a good length for a study session?
It suits many people: long enough to settle into the material, with time left in the hour for a real break. Try 45 minutes on, then 10 or 15 away from the desk, and shorten the block if you notice yourself drifting well before the timer rings.
