Half an hour
Thirty minutes is the daily unit in the most widely quoted exercise advice. The CDC’s example of meeting the weekly goal of 150 minutes for adults is 30 minutes a day, five days a week, of moderate activity such as brisk walking. A half-hour timer turns that into something you can start right now: shoes on, press Start, and turn for home when the display reaches 15:00 if you are walking out and back.
In the kitchen, half an hour covers a lot of oven work, from a tray of roast vegetables to a batch of flapjacks, though recipes and ovens differ, so peek a little before it rings. It is also a natural length for a homework block, an instrument practice, a meeting with a firm end, or the outer limit of a nap: the Sleep Foundation advises against napping much past 30 minutes.
- The CDC says adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week, for example 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, plus muscle-strengthening activity on at least 2 days. Source: CDC, Physical activity guidelines for adults.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 30 minutes of exercise a day enough?
For adults, 30 minutes of moderate activity on five days a week is the CDC’s example of reaching the recommended 150 minutes, alongside muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days. Children and teenagers are advised to get 60 minutes every day.
Can I add time while the timer is running?
Yes. Press the + key, or the +1 min button, to add a minute without stopping, which helps when a dish needs a little longer; the − key takes a minute off. The display and the ring time update straight away.
What is 30 minutes in hours?
Half an hour, written 0.5 in decimal hours on a timesheet. Two 30-minute blocks make an hour, and a day holds 48 of them, which is why half-hours are a common grid for calendars and timetables.
