Los Angeles’s time zone
Los Angeles keeps Pacific Time: PST (UTC−8) for the colder months and PDT (UTC−7) while daylight saving is on. In 2027 the clocks go forward on Sunday 14 March and back again on Sunday 7 November. Phones and computers set Los Angeles’s clocks from the America/Los_Angeles zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.
Los Angeles keeps Pacific Time with the rest of California, Washington, Oregon (bar most of Malheur County) and Nevada (bar West Wendover). The coast took the 120th meridian on 18 November 1883 with the railroads, and California has followed the federal daylight saving dates since the Uniform Time Act came into force in 1967.
California once ran its own experiment. During an electricity shortage in 1948 the state put clocks forward on 14 March and kept them there until 1 January 1949, a summer time that ran right through the winter. The backlash was strong, yet voters approved daylight saving by ballot the following year. Today the practical point for Angelenos is the gap to Asia: when it is 9:00 am in Los Angeles it is late evening in India and already past 1:00 am the next day in Tokyo and Seoul, so cross-Pacific calls usually land in the California afternoon or evening.
