New York’s time zone

New York keeps Eastern Time: EST (UTC−5) for the colder months and EDT (UTC−4) while daylight saving is on. In 2027 the clocks go forward on Sunday 14 March and back again on Sunday 7 November. Phones and computers set New York’s clocks from the America/New_York zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.

New York’s clocks have run on the 75th meridian since noon on 18 November 1883, the day the American railroads replaced dozens of local times with four standard zones. Congress only made those zones law with the Standard Time Act of 1918, and for most of the next half-century the city set its own summer time, keeping daylight saving under city rules from 1920 until the Uniform Time Act of 1966 took over in 1967.

The current pattern, the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, comes from the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and has applied since 2007. Every state on the East Coast changes on the same night, so New York always matches Toronto, Miami, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. For calls with Europe, the comfortable window is the New York morning: 9:00 am in Manhattan is mid-afternoon in London and Paris for most of the year.

EST = UTC −5 · EDT = UTC −4

  • During the Second World War the whole country, New York included, stayed on “War Time” (one hour ahead of standard time) all year from 9 February 1942 to 30 September 1945. Source: IANA tz database, file “northamerica”.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time zone is New York in?

New York is on Eastern Time: EST, UTC−5, in winter and EDT, UTC−4, in summer. Its tz database zone is America/New_York.

Is New York time the same as Eastern Time?

Yes. New York keeps Eastern Time: EST in winter and EDT from March to November. The tz database uses the America/New_York zone for most of the eastern United States, and Toronto and Montréal in Canada change their clocks on the same nights.

Why do phones list New York for Eastern Time?

Time zone settings name a representative city rather than a region, because the rules belong to places, not to labels such as EST. America/New_York is the tz database zone for Eastern Time, so choosing it gives every US Eastern clock change correctly.
