Hawaii’s time zone
Hawaii keeps Hawaii–Aleutian Standard Time (HST), UTC−10, all year round: its clocks do not change for summer. Phones and computers set Hawaii’s clocks from the Pacific/Honolulu zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.
Hawaii has kept one clock since 1947. From 1896 the islands ran on a standard time of UTC−10:30, half an hour off the hourly zones used on the mainland, and moved to UTC−10 on 8 June 1947. Summer time came only twice: three weeks in 1933, from 30 April to 21 May, and the US War Time of 1942–1945.
Because Hawaii does not change its clocks, its gap to the mainland changes instead: Honolulu is two hours behind Los Angeles in winter and three hours behind from March to November, and five or six hours behind New York. Westward, it sits close to the date line. When it is Monday afternoon in Honolulu it is already Tuesday in Tokyo, Sydney and Auckland, which is worth remembering for flights and calls across the Pacific.

Frequently Asked Questions
What time zone is Hawaii in?
Hawaii is on Hawaii–Aleutian Standard Time (HST), UTC−10, all year. Its tz database zone is Pacific/Honolulu.
How far behind the mainland is Hawaii?
Two hours behind California and five behind New York in winter; three and six hours behind in summer, because the mainland moves its clocks forward and Hawaii does not.
Why was Hawaii once on a half-hour time?
Its standard time was originally UTC−10:30, close to the islands’ own solar time. Hawaii moved to the hourly offset of UTC−10 in June 1947 and has stayed there.
Is Hawaii on the same time as Alaska?
No. Most of Alaska is one hour ahead of Hawaii in winter and two hours ahead in summer. The western Aleutian Islands share Hawaii’s UTC−10 in winter but move to UTC−9 in summer, while Hawaii stays put.
