Auckland’s time zone
Auckland keeps New Zealand Time: NZST (UTC+12) for the colder months and NZDT (UTC+13) while daylight saving is on. In 2027 the clocks go back on Sunday 4 April and forward again on Sunday 26 September. Phones and computers set Auckland’s clocks from the Pacific/Auckland zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.
New Zealand was early to standard time: the tz database records the switch from local mean time to a national UTC+11:30 on 2 November 1868. Between 1928 and 1940 summer time added just half an hour. On 1 January 1946 the country moved its standard time to UTC+12, and today it adds a full hour in summer, from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April.
Sitting just west of the date line, Auckland is among the first big cities to start each new day, and in the southern summer it reaches UTC+13. The Chatham Islands keep their own time 45 minutes ahead of the mainland. Because New Zealand’s summer is the northern winter, it is 13 hours ahead of London in January but 11 hours ahead in July.
