Sydney’s time zone

Sydney keeps Australian Eastern Time: AEST (UTC+10) for the colder months and AEDT (UTC+11) while daylight saving is on. In 2027 the clocks go back on Sunday 4 April and forward again on Sunday 3 October. Phones and computers set Sydney’s clocks from the Australia/Sydney zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.

Sydney keeps Australian Eastern Time with the rest of New South Wales, which has observed summer time every year since 1971, as have Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT. Since 2008 the season has run from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, the southern summer, so Sydney moves its clocks in the opposite direction to Europe and North America.

Queensland is the exception on the east coast. It last used daylight saving in the summer of 1991–92, so from October to April Brisbane, on UTC+10, is an hour behind Sydney, on UTC+11, though both are AEST in winter. The opposite seasons also mean the gap to London swings by two hours over the year: Sydney is 9 hours ahead in the northern summer and 11 hours ahead in the northern winter, with short weeks in March, April and October when only one side has changed.

AEST = UTC +10 · AEDT = UTC +11
