Singapore’s time zone
Singapore keeps Singapore Time (SGT), UTC+8, all year round: its clocks do not change for summer. Phones and computers set Singapore’s clocks from the Asia/Singapore zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.
Singapore’s clock has moved more often than most: local mean time, then UTC+7 in 1905, UTC+7:20 from 1936, UTC+7:30 from 1941, Tokyo time during the Japanese occupation, and UTC+7:30 again after the war. At midnight on 1 January 1982, Singapore and peninsular Malaysia moved together to UTC+8, aligning with East Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Philippines.
By longitude Singapore sits nearer the UTC+7 line, so the sun rises and sets late by the clock: around 7:00 am and 7:00 pm through the year, with little seasonal change near the equator. Kuala Lumpur shares Singapore’s tz zone and clock, and Singapore matches Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taipei and Perth. Singapore has no daylight saving, so its gap to Europe and the Americas moves only with their changes.
