Tokyo’s time zone

Tokyo keeps Japan Standard Time (JST), UTC+9, all year round: its clocks do not change for summer. Phones and computers set Tokyo’s clocks from the Asia/Tokyo zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.

Japan has kept UTC+9 since 1 January 1888, based on the 135° E meridian that runs through Akashi near Kobe. The one exception was summer time imposed by the occupation authorities from 1948 to 1951. It was so unpopular, partly because people believed it meant longer working hours, that the Diet scrapped it in 1951, soon after the San Francisco Peace Treaty was signed.

Japan has not changed its clocks since. Tokyo shares its time with Seoul, and is an hour ahead of Beijing, Shanghai and Taipei. Without daylight saving, summer sunrises in Tokyo come very early, around 4:30 am in June, which has kept the debate about summer time alive. For business across the Pacific, Tokyo’s morning is the previous afternoon or evening in California.

JST = UTC +9
