How this works
Method
Here EST means Eastern Time, EST (UTC−5) in its winter and EDT (UTC−4) in its summer, as kept in New York; IST means India Standard Time, UTC+5:30 all year. So IST is 10 h 30 min ahead of EST and 9 h 30 min ahead of EDT. Two 9-to-5 working days do not overlap at all, so one side has to start early or stay late. Full method

How to convert EST to IST
Here EST means Eastern Time, EST (UTC−5) in its winter and EDT (UTC−4) in its summer, as kept in New York; IST means India Standard Time, UTC+5:30 all year. So IST is 10 h 30 min ahead of EST and 9 h 30 min ahead of EDT. Two 9-to-5 working days do not overlap at all, so one side has to start early or stay late.
Eastern Time is the clock of New York, Boston, Washington, Atlanta and Toronto, and of much of US finance and government. People convert EST to IST to plan a call with an office in Hyderabad or Chennai, to tell family in India when a flight lands in New York, or to watch a US event live from India. The Eastern working morning lines up with the Indian evening, which makes this one of the easier US–India pairs.
Two traps catch people. First, “EST” is said all year, yet from mid-March to early November New York actually runs on EDT (UTC−4); the page uses New York’s real clock for the date you choose. Second, India’s offset ends in :30, so a meeting at the top of the hour in New York always lands at half past in India, and calendar apps that only offer whole-hour slots on one side can look odd on the other.
Rule of thumb: Add 10½ hours to Eastern time in winter, 9½ in summer: 9:00 am in New York is 7:30 pm (winter) or 6:30 pm (summer) in India.

- Abbreviations are ambiguous: in the tz database’s own notes, IST can mean time in India, Ireland or Israel, which is why scheduling tools should name the zone or the UTC offset. Source: IANA tz database, Theory and pragmatics (time zone abbreviations).
