How this works

Method

Here IST means India Standard Time, UTC+5:30 all year; EST means Eastern Time, EST (UTC−5) in its winter and EDT (UTC−4) in its summer, as kept in New York. So EST is 10 h 30 min behind IST, and EDT is 9 h 30 min behind. Two 9-to-5 working days do not overlap at all, so one side has to start early or stay late. Full method

How to convert IST to EST

Here IST means India Standard Time, UTC+5:30 all year; EST means Eastern Time, EST (UTC−5) in its winter and EDT (UTC−4) in its summer, as kept in New York. So EST is 10 h 30 min behind IST, and EDT is 9 h 30 min behind. Two 9-to-5 working days do not overlap at all, so one side has to start early or stay late.

From India, Eastern Time matters for anyone working with New York, New Jersey, Washington or Toronto: back-office and IT teams, students with East Coast universities, and families following a relative’s day. The US East Coast wakes up as the Indian working day ends, so an Indian evening, roughly 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm, is the natural window for live meetings.

When you read a US time, check whether it is Eastern or Pacific: they differ by three hours, and US companies often quote Eastern for nationwide events such as product launches and TV broadcasts. The page converts to the clock New York actually uses on that date, EST in winter or EDT in summer, so you don’t have to work out which one applies. For dates in mid-March or early November, convert the specific day, because the US switches on a Sunday and the gap changes overnight.

Rule of thumb: Take away 10½ hours from Indian time in winter or 9½ hours in summer: 8:00 pm in Mumbai is 9:30 am (EST) or 10:30 am (EDT) in New York.

EST = IST −10:30 · EDT = IST −9:30

  • US clocks change at 2:00 am local time, on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November; New York, being furthest east of the mainland zones, changes first. Source: NIST, Daylight Saving Time (DST).

Meeting planner: best times for IST and EST

The IST and EST working days never overlap, so every meeting asks one side to start early or stay late. The shaded runs are the hours when both clocks are between 7 am and 9 pm; pick the end that suits whoever has the more flexible day, and swap it now and then.

January: IST and EST

  • No hour is inside 9 to 5 on both clocks.
  • Early or late for one side: 7:00 am to 7:30 am IST is 8:30 pm to 9:00 pm EST the day before (30 min); 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm IST is 7:00 am to 10:30 am EST (3 h 30 min).

July: IST and EDT

  • No hour is inside 9 to 5 on both clocks.
  • Early or late for one side: 4:30 pm to 9:00 pm IST is 7:00 am to 11:30 am EDT (4 h 30 min).
