How to convert GST to IST
Here GST means Gulf Standard Time, UTC+4 all year; IST means India Standard Time, UTC+5:30 all year. So IST is 1 h 30 min ahead of GST all year. Two 9-to-5 working days overlap by 6 h 30 min all year.
Gulf Standard Time is the clock of the United Arab Emirates and Oman: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Muscat. A large Indian community lives and works in the Gulf, so GST to IST is used every day to call home, to plan money transfers before a bank cut-off in India, and to set meetings between Dubai offices and Indian teams. The gap is small, so the working days overlap almost completely.
Neither the UAE nor India uses daylight saving time, so India is 1 h 30 min ahead of Dubai on every date. Be careful with the letters: in India, GST more often means the Goods and Services Tax, and some places use GST for other zones, so writing “Dubai time” or “UTC+4” avoids confusion. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain are on UTC+3, one hour behind the UAE and 2 h 30 min behind India.
Rule of thumb: Add 1½ hours to Gulf time: 9:00 am in Dubai is 10:30 am in India, and 3:00 pm there is 4:30 pm here.
IST = GST +1:30
