How to convert AEST to IST
Here AEST means Australian Eastern Time, AEST (UTC+10) in its winter and AEDT (UTC+11) in its summer, as kept in Sydney; IST means India Standard Time, UTC+5:30 all year. So IST is 5 h 30 min behind AEST in January and 4 h 30 min behind in July. Two 9-to-5 working days overlap by 2 h 30 min in January and 3 h 30 min in July.
Australia and India share cricket, universities and a growing amount of business, and AEST to IST is how Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra time is turned into Indian time. Australia is ahead, so an Australian afternoon meeting at 3:00 pm lands mid-morning in India, and the working days overlap comfortably.
Southern-hemisphere seasons reverse the usual pattern. New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania use daylight time (AEDT, UTC+11) from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, during the Australian summer, so the gap to India is largest in the Indian winter: 5 h 30 min. From April to October they are on AEST (UTC+10) and India is 4 h 30 min behind. Queensland, including Brisbane and the Gold Coast, keeps AEST all year, so for Brisbane the gap is always 4 h 30 min. This page follows Sydney; for Brisbane, use the winter column of the table all year.
Rule of thumb: Subtract 4½ hours from Australian Eastern Standard Time (5½ from daylight time) to get Indian time: 2:00 pm in Sydney is 9:30 am or 8:30 am in India.
IST = AEDT −5:30 · IST = AEST −4:30
- In the tz database, Australia/Brisbane follows Queensland’s rules, which last used daylight saving time in the summer of 1991–92, while New South Wales changes clocks on the first Sundays of October and April. Source: IANA tz database, file australasia.
