How this works

Method

Here IST means India Standard Time, UTC+5:30 all year; AEST means Australian Eastern Time, AEST (UTC+10) in its winter and AEDT (UTC+11) in its summer, as kept in Sydney. So AEDT is 5 h 30 min ahead of IST, and AEST is 4 h 30 min ahead. Two 9-to-5 working days overlap by 2 h 30 min in January and 3 h 30 min in July. Full method

  • The pickers find about a thousand more cities, states and countries (Seattle, Bangalore, Texas), and each conversion page names the next clock change on either side.
  • The converter opens on the time now, live, with a Now choice beside the time, and the main converter starts from your own time zone.

How to convert IST to AEST

Here IST means India Standard Time, UTC+5:30 all year; AEST means Australian Eastern Time, AEST (UTC+10) in its winter and AEDT (UTC+11) in its summer, as kept in Sydney. So AEDT is 5 h 30 min ahead of IST, and AEST is 4 h 30 min ahead. Two 9-to-5 working days overlap by 2 h 30 min in January and 3 h 30 min in July.

From India, Australian Eastern Time is the clock of Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane, and IST to AEST is searched by students heading to Australian universities, by teams serving Australian banks and telcos, and by families with relatives there. Australia is ahead, so the Indian morning overlaps the Australian afternoon: a 9:30 am start in India is already 2:00 pm or 3:00 pm in Sydney.

Daylight saving runs the other way round from the northern hemisphere. Sydney and Melbourne move to AEDT (UTC+11) from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, so in the Indian winter they are 5 h 30 min ahead; in the Indian summer, on AEST (UTC+10), 4 h 30 min. Brisbane stays on AEST all year. Perth is on a different clock altogether, Australian Western Time, 2 h 30 min ahead of India.

Rule of thumb: Add 4½ hours to Indian time while Sydney is on AEST (April to October) and 5½ while it is on AEDT: 10:00 am IST is 2:30 pm AEST or 3:30 pm AEDT.

AEDT = IST +5:30 · AEST = IST +4:30

  • Western Australia last moved its clocks for summer in a trial that ran from December 2006 to March 2009; Perth has stayed on UTC+8 all year since. Source: IANA tz database, file australasia.
