The Philippines’s time zone

The Philippines keeps Philippine Standard Time (PHT), UTC+8, all year round: its clocks do not change for summer. Phones and computers set the Philippines’s clocks from the Asia/Manila zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.

The Philippines keeps Philippine Standard Time, UTC+8, set by Republic Act No. 10535 of 2013, with the official time kept by the weather service, PAGASA. The country has one of the oddest calendar histories: under Spanish rule it kept American (west of Greenwich) dates, and in 1844 the governor-general declared that 30 December would be followed directly by 1 January 1845, skipping a day to match its Asian neighbours.

Daylight saving has been tried only briefly, most recently in 1990. The abbreviation causes confusion: the law uses PST, the same letters as US Pacific Standard Time, so PAGASA suggests PhST. For the many people working with US clients, a 9:00 am start in New York is 9:00 or 10:00 pm in Manila, depending on the US season.

PHT = UTC +8

  • In 1844 the Philippines skipped 31 December to move to the Asian side of the date line, going straight from 30 December 1844 to 1 January 1845. Source: IANA tz database, file “asia”.
