Toronto’s time zone
Toronto keeps Eastern Time: EST (UTC−5) for the colder months and EDT (UTC−4) while daylight saving is on. In 2027 the clocks go forward on Sunday 14 March and back again on Sunday 7 November. Phones and computers set Toronto’s clocks from the America/Toronto zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.
Toronto shares Eastern Time with New York and changes clocks on the same nights, so the two cities never differ. Ontario has set daylight saving on the North American pattern since 2007; before 1974 Toronto had its own summer time dates, recorded in the tz database as separate Toronto rules.
Canada’s clocks are less settled than they look. During 2026 British Columbia, Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Manitoba each stopped changing their clocks and moved to permanent time, but Ontario did not, so Toronto still springs forward in March and falls back in November. That means the gap from Toronto to Vancouver, Calgary or Winnipeg depends on the season in a way it did not before, while the gap to New York, Montréal and Ottawa stays at zero.
EST = UTC −5 · EDT = UTC −4
