Denver’s time zone

Denver keeps Mountain Time: MST (UTC−7) for the colder months and MDT (UTC−6) while daylight saving is on. In 2027 the clocks go forward on Sunday 14 March and back again on Sunday 7 November. Phones and computers set Denver’s clocks from the America/Denver zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.

Denver is the reference city for US Mountain Time, the zone of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming, Montana and southern Idaho. Mountain Time began with the railroads on 18 November 1883, based on the 105th meridian, which passes right through the Denver area.

Before national rules arrived, Denver tried summer time on its own: the city observed daylight saving in 1920 and 1921 and again in 1965 and 1966, the last two summers before the Uniform Time Act made the dates uniform in 1967. Denver’s zone is also the right one for the Navajo Nation, which keeps daylight saving even where it lies inside Arizona. A useful rule for Colorado is that it shares its clock with Phoenix in winter, but is an hour ahead of Arizona from March to November.

MST = UTC −7 · MDT = UTC −6

Frequently Asked Questions

What time zone is Denver in?

Denver is on Mountain Time: MST, UTC−7, in winter and MDT, UTC−6, in summer. Its tz database zone is America/Denver.

Is Denver in the same time zone as Phoenix?

Both are on Mountain Standard Time in winter, so they match from November to March. Denver moves to MDT (UTC−6) in March while Phoenix stays on UTC−7, so in summer Denver is one hour ahead.

Which big cities share Denver’s time?

Salt Lake City, Albuquerque, Boise, Cheyenne and Calgary keep Mountain Time. Calgary is a special case from 2026: Alberta has stopped changing its clocks, so it now matches Denver only in summer.

Does all of Colorado change its clocks?

Yes. The whole state moves from MST (UTC−7) to MDT (UTC−6) on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November, the federal dates used since 2007.
