Phoenix’s time zone

Phoenix keeps Mountain Standard Time (MST), UTC−7, all year round: its clocks do not change for summer. Phones and computers set Phoenix’s clocks from the America/Phoenix zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.

Phoenix keeps Mountain Standard Time all year. Arizona followed the federal daylight saving rules once, in 1967, the first year of the Uniform Time Act, and left on 21 March 1968, using the Act’s option for a state to stay on standard time all year.

The exception inside the state is the Navajo Nation, which spans Arizona, New Mexico and Utah and keeps daylight saving like its neighbours. The Hopi Reservation, surrounded by Navajo land, does not. For everyone else the effect is that Phoenix seems to change zones without touching its clocks: it matches Denver in winter and matches Los Angeles in summer, when California’s PDT is also UTC−7.

MST = UTC −7

Frequently Asked Questions

What time zone is Phoenix in?

Phoenix is on Mountain Standard Time (MST), UTC−7, all year. Its tz database zone is America/Phoenix.

Is Arizona on Mountain Time or Pacific Time right now?

Arizona is always on Mountain Standard Time (UTC−7). In summer that happens to equal Pacific Daylight Time, so Phoenix shows the same clock as Los Angeles; in winter it shows the same clock as Denver.

Does the Navajo Nation in Arizona change its clocks?

Yes. The Navajo Nation observes daylight saving time because its land crosses three states, so in summer it is an hour ahead of the rest of Arizona. The Hopi Reservation inside it follows Arizona and stays on MST.

When did Arizona stop using daylight saving time?

Arizona changed its clocks in 1967 only, the first year of the Uniform Time Act, and has stayed on MST since 21 March 1968. Only the Navajo Nation, in the north-east of the state, still moves its clocks.
