How to convert UTC to EST
Here UTC means Coordinated Universal Time, which never changes; EST means Eastern Time, EST (UTC−5) in its winter and EDT (UTC−4) in its summer, as kept in New York. So EST is 5 h behind UTC in January and 4 h behind in July. Two 9-to-5 working days overlap by 3 h in January and 4 h in July.
UTC is the clock of computers and of anything that has to work across borders: server logs, databases, APIs, flight plans, weather observations and satellite data. A timestamp such as 2027-07-14T18:30:00Z is in UTC; the Z means an offset of zero and is read “Zulu”. Converting UTC to Eastern Time is how a developer in New York reads an error log, or how an airline passenger turns a schedule in UTC into a local departure.
Eastern Time is UTC−5 in winter (EST) and UTC−4 in summer (EDT), so the same UTC hour maps to two different local times across the year. Logs that span the March or November change will show a one-hour jump if you convert them all with a single fixed offset; convert each timestamp on its own date, as this page does. When writing times for other people, sending them in UTC with the Z avoids the guessing entirely.
Rule of thumb: Subtract four hours from UTC between mid-March and early November, and five hours the rest of the year: 14:00Z is 10:00 am EDT or 9:00 am EST.
EST = UTC −5:00 · EST = UTC −4:00
- In internet timestamps the suffix Z denotes a UTC offset of 00:00 and is often spoken “Zulu”, from the ICAO phonetic alphabet. Source: RFC 3339, Date and Time on the Internet: Timestamps.
