How to convert PST to EST
Here PST means Pacific Time, PST (UTC−8) in its winter and PDT (UTC−7) in its summer, as kept in Los Angeles; EST means Eastern Time, EST (UTC−5) in its winter and EDT (UTC−4) in its summer, as kept in New York. So EST is always 3 h ahead of PST. Two 9-to-5 working days overlap by 5 h all year.
The three-hour gap across the continental US is the most common time sum in American life: a 9:00 am West Coast start is noon in New York, a prime-time show at 8:00 pm Eastern airs at 5:00 pm Pacific if it is broadcast live, and a Seattle team that wants to catch a Boston colleague before they leave has until about 2:00 pm.
Because both coasts follow the same federal rules, the difference is three hours almost every hour of the year, and the page’s winter and summer tables match. The exception is the change night itself. Clocks move at 2:00 am local time, so New York switches three hours before Los Angeles does. For those three hours in March the coasts are four hours apart, and in November only two. It rarely matters unless you are scheduling overnight server work or catching a red-eye flight that night.
Rule of thumb: Add three hours to Pacific time to get Eastern time, whatever the season: 10:00 am in Los Angeles is 1:00 pm in New York.
EST = PST +3:00
- Each US zone changes at 2:00 am of its own local time on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November, so the switch sweeps across the country from east to west. Source: NIST, Daylight Saving Time (DST).
