Berlin’s time zone
Berlin keeps Central European Time: CET (UTC+1) for the colder months and CEST (UTC+2) while daylight saving is on. In 2027 the clocks go forward on Sunday 28 March and back again on Sunday 31 October. Phones and computers set Berlin’s clocks from the Europe/Berlin zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.
Germany adopted Central European Time in April 1893, and Berlin has kept UTC+1 as its standard time ever since. The years after the war were irregular. In the summer of 1945 the Soviet-occupied city ran two hours ahead of standard time, matching Moscow, and in 1947 West Germany briefly had a “midsummer” time, also two hours ahead, from 11 May to 29 June.
Germany then went without summer time from 1950 until 1980, when it re-introduced it in step with its neighbours. Since 1996 it has followed the common European rule of the last Sundays of March and October. Berlin’s clock is shared across central Europe: Vienna, Prague, Warsaw, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Zürich and Rome all show the same time, which makes scheduling across central Europe simple.
CET = UTC +1 · CEST = UTC +2
