Nepal’s time zone

Nepal keeps Nepal Time (NPT), UTC+5:45, all year round: its clocks do not change for summer. Phones and computers set Nepal’s clocks from the Asia/Kathmandu zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.

Nepal keeps one of the world’s few quarter-hour offsets: UTC+5:45. Until 1986 it used UTC+5:30, the same as India, then moved its clocks forward 15 minutes. Nepal Time has stayed there since, with no daylight saving.

The result is a clock that sits 15 minutes ahead of India, 45 minutes ahead of Pakistan and 15 minutes behind Bangladesh and Bhutan (UTC+6). Kathmandu, Pokhara and the Everest region all share it. When converting, remember that every time in Nepal ends in an unusual quarter: 9:00 am in Kathmandu is 3:15 am UTC and 8:45 am in Delhi. Only two other places use a :45 offset: the Chatham Islands of New Zealand (UTC+12:45) and the Eucla area of Western Australia (UTC+8:45).

NPT = UTC +5:45
