Pakistan’s time zone

Pakistan keeps Pakistan Standard Time (PKT), UTC+5, all year round: its clocks do not change for summer. Phones and computers set Pakistan’s clocks from the Asia/Karachi zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.

Pakistan has used UTC+5 since 30 September 1951, when it moved off the UTC+5:30 it had shared with British India; the abbreviation PKT dates from 1971. That half-hour difference is why Pakistan and India are 30 minutes apart, not a whole hour.

Pakistan has tried summer time three times. A one-year trial ran from April to October 2002. It was used again from 1 June to 1 November 2008, and from 15 April to 1 November 2009, each time moving clocks to UTC+6, and has not been used since. The whole country, from Karachi to Lahore and Islamabad, keeps one time, an hour ahead of Dubai and two hours ahead of Riyadh.

PKT = UTC +5
