How to convert UTC to IST
Here UTC means Coordinated Universal Time, which never changes; IST means India Standard Time, UTC+5:30 all year. So IST is always 5 h 30 min ahead of UTC. Two 9-to-5 working days overlap by 2 h 30 min all year.
India is one of the simplest places to convert from UTC: its offset, +5:30, has not changed in decades and there is no daylight saving time to worry about. That makes UTC to IST a pure sum, useful when you read a cloud provider’s incident report, an exam or contest start time given in UTC, a satellite pass, or a log file from a server abroad.
The half hour is what trips people up. A cron job set for 00:00 UTC runs at 5:30 am in India, not 5:00 am, and a weekly report scheduled for the top of the hour in UTC always lands at half past in Indian time. Programming contests and online exams that publish UTC start times usually expect you to do this sum yourself. Unlike conversions to Europe or North America, the answer for a given UTC time is the same in January and July, so a single table is enough for the whole year.
Rule of thumb: Add 5 hours 30 minutes to UTC, and move to the next day if you pass midnight: 20:00 UTC is 1:30 am IST the next day.
IST = UTC +5:30

Frequently Asked Questions
What is 9 am UTC in IST?
9:00 am UTC is 2:30 pm IST, all year round.
Is IST UTC+5:30 all year?
Yes. India does not observe daylight saving time, so IST is UTC+5:30 in every season, and a UTC time always converts to the same Indian time.
What time is 00:00 UTC in India?
Midnight UTC is 5:30 am IST the same date. Daily jobs and contests that start at 00:00 UTC therefore begin early on an Indian morning, not at Indian midnight.
