Lagos’s time zone

Lagos keeps West Africa Time (WAT), UTC+1, all year round: its clocks do not change for summer. Phones and computers set Lagos’s clocks from the Africa/Lagos zone of the IANA tz database, and so does this page.

Lagos keeps West Africa Time, UTC+1, and Nigeria has not changed its clocks since 1 September 1919. Before then the colony used Greenwich time and local mean time, and from 1914 a half-hour offset of UTC+0:30, before settling on the whole hour it has kept for more than a century.

Nigeria has no daylight saving, and neither do its WAT neighbours: Cameroon, Benin, Niger, Chad, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, western Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola all keep the same clock. Ghana, to the west, is an hour behind on UTC+0. Close to the equator, Lagos has days of roughly the same length all year, which is one reason seasonal clock changes were never needed.

WAT = UTC +1
