How this works

Method

Here BST means UK time, GMT (UTC+0) in its winter and BST (UTC+1) in its summer, as kept in London; IST means India Standard Time, UTC+5:30 all year. So IST is 5 h 30 min ahead of GMT and 4 h 30 min ahead of BST. Two 9-to-5 working days overlap by 2 h 30 min in January and 3 h 30 min in July. Full method

How it’s tested

One worked example for this page is checked by automated tests before every release: given the inputs, the tool must show the expected answer.

Changes

  • 15 more conversion pages (IST to CST, BST to IST, SGT, GST, JST, MST and more); each conversion page shows all 24 hours with working hours shaded, and its best meeting times.
  • The pickers find about a thousand more cities, states and countries (Seattle, Bangalore, Texas), and each conversion page names the next clock change on either side.
  • The converter opens on the time now, live, with a Now choice beside the time, and the main converter starts from your own time zone.
  • First published, with a world clock, pages for the time in 31 places and 15 common conversions such as PST to IST.

How to convert BST to IST

Here BST means UK time, GMT (UTC+0) in its winter and BST (UTC+1) in its summer, as kept in London; IST means India Standard Time, UTC+5:30 all year. So IST is 5 h 30 min ahead of GMT and 4 h 30 min ahead of BST. Two 9-to-5 working days overlap by 2 h 30 min in January and 3 h 30 min in July.

BST to IST, or UK time to India time, is one of the most common conversions for the large British Indian community, for UK companies with offices in Bengaluru, Chennai or Gurugram, and for students in British universities. The working days overlap well: a London morning from 9:00 am falls in the Indian afternoon, so the first half of the UK day is the natural slot for meetings.

BST, British Summer Time, is UTC+1 and runs from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October; in winter the UK goes back to GMT, UTC+0. This page follows London’s clock, so it uses BST in summer and GMT in winter, whatever the label says. That makes India 4 h 30 min ahead in summer and 5 h 30 min ahead in winter. A meeting fixed at 9:30 am London time is at 2:00 pm in India in summer and 3:00 pm in winter, which matters for teams in India finishing their day.

Rule of thumb: Add 4½ hours to UK time in summer and 5½ hours in winter: 10:00 am in London is 2:30 pm (BST) or 3:30 pm (GMT) in India.

IST = GMT +5:30 · IST = BST +4:30
