How time zones work
Every clock in the world is set as an offset from Coordinated Universal Time, UTC: Tokyo is UTC+9, New York UTC−5 in winter. Most offsets are whole hours, but not all: India uses UTC+5:30, Nepal UTC+5:45 and the Chatham Islands of New Zealand UTC+12:45 in their winter. Populated places run from UTC−11 in American Samoa to UTC+14 on Kiritimati in Kiribati, so for one hour each day three calendar dates are in use at once.
Which offset a place uses, and when it changes, is decided by its government and changes more often than people expect. The shared record is the IANA time zone database, maintained by volunteers and used by phones, computers and this page. Each zone in it is named after a city, such as America/New_York or Asia/Kolkata, because names like EST or IST are ambiguous. The world clock reads your browser’s copy of that database, so daylight saving time is applied automatically for each city on the right date, and you don’t need to know who changes clocks when. If a government announces a change at short notice, browsers pick it up with their next update to the database, so an out-of-date phone or computer can show the old time for a while.
- Abbreviations are ambiguous in practice: CST can mean China or North American Central time, and IST can mean time in India, Ireland or Israel; the database recommends numeric offsets instead. Source: IANA tz database, Theory and pragmatics (time zone abbreviations).
- Kiritimati (Christmas Island, Kiribati) moved from UTC−10 to UTC+14 at the end of 1994, skipping 31 December 1994, which is why it now has the world’s earliest clock. Source: IANA tz database, file australasia.
- Every offset and clock change on these pages comes from the IANA tz database, version 2026c. Source: IANA tz database (version 2026c).

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the world clock handle daylight saving time?
It asks your browser for each city’s time from the IANA time zone database, which records when every place changes its clocks. When New York, London or Sydney switch, the clock follows on the right date without any setting on your side.
Which place is the first to see a new day?
Kiritimati in Kiribati, on UTC+14, is the first inhabited place to reach midnight. The last are American Samoa and Niue on UTC−11, 25 hours later. Ships at sea can use UTC−12, which the database keeps only as a nautical zone.
Why do some places have half-hour or 45-minute offsets?
Countries choose their offset to suit their longitude and politics, not a neat hour. India uses UTC+5:30 for the whole country, Nepal UTC+5:45 and Iran UTC+3:30. The world clock shows them all to the minute.
What is the difference between UTC and GMT?
For everyday clocks they show the same time. GMT is the old name for mean solar time at Greenwich and is now also the UK’s winter clock; UTC is the atomic time scale that computers and the world’s clocks are set from.
