Formats, start numbers and covers

Numbers are drawn as text in a standard PDF font at the top or bottom margin. “3 of 12” counts every page in the output, so it stays right after you combine files.

Set the first number to continue a sequence, for example starting at 41 for the second volume of a report. Several open PDFs are numbered as one continuous document in the order shown, so merging and numbering happen in one step.

Check pages that already have a footer: a number at the bottom can overlap existing text, in which case put it at the top or in a corner instead. Look over a few pages in the preview before saving, especially any landscape ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens on landscape or rotated pages?

Numbers are placed on the page as you see it, so a page turned sideways still gets its number along its visible bottom edge.

Can I skip the cover page?

Yes. With “Skip the first page” on, the first page stays blank and the count carries on, so the second page shows 2 (or your start number plus one).

Can I number pages in Roman numerals?

Not yet. The formats are plain numbers, “Page 3” and “3 of 12”. Roman numerals for front matter are on the list.
