Which forms can be filled

Fillable PDFs carry real form fields (text boxes, checkboxes and lists of choices) defined in the file. The tool lists each one, fills it, and keeps the form working unless you flatten it, so the next person can still edit the answers.

Some official forms are built in Adobe’s older XFA format, which stores fields differently; if a form shows no fields here, it is probably XFA or a scanned flat page. Flatten before sending a form you do not want changed, and fill before you merge, because merging leaves fields behind.

Long forms are easier in the field list than on the page: work down the list, check that nothing is left blank, then save.

How to fill PDF form3 steps, all on your device
  1. Open the form. Drop a PDF with fillable fields. The fields appear as a list beside the pages.
  2. Fill it in. Type answers, tick boxes and choose options. Turn on Flatten to make the answers part of the page.
  3. Save. Download the filled PDF. Add a signature with the Sign tool if it needs one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “flatten” mean?

Flattening turns the form fields into ordinary page content: the answers stay visible but can no longer be edited, and every viewer shows them the same way.

My PDF has no fields. Can I still fill it?

Only forms with real fillable fields are listed. For a scanned or flat form, use the Sign tool to place your signature; typing text anywhere on a page is planned.

Will the form still be fillable after I save?

Yes, unless Flatten is on. Without flattening, the answers are stored in the fields and anyone can change them in any PDF reader.
