Method

Each image is decoded by the browser itself (HEIC only where it opens HEIC, as Safari 17 and later does; the site ships no HEIC decoder, as HEVC is patented), turned upright, resized if asked and drawn on a canvas in a background worker, then written as JPG, PNG or WebP (libwebp where the browser can’t). The new file has no EXIF unless you keep it, GPS removed unless you keep all. SVGs are drawn through an image element, which runs no scripts and loads nothing they link to; JFIF files, already JPEGs, are copied byte for byte into a .jpg.

Changes

  • Added SVG to PNG (any size, transparent or coloured background, nothing the SVG links to is loaded) and JFIF to JPG (renamed without re-encoding).
  • Browsers that can’t open HEIC say so before any file is chosen, with the quickest ways for the device and a QR code to carry on in Safari on an iPhone.
  • HEIC now opens only where the browser reads it (Safari 17+), with tips elsewhere; the bundled HEIC decoder was removed because HEVC is covered by patents.

Why websites send WebP, and why PNG is easier to use

Websites serve images as WebP because the files are smaller than PNG or JPEG for the same picture, which makes pages load faster. Browsers show WebP without fuss, so you only notice it when you save an image and an older editor, a word processor or an upload form refuses the file.

WebP comes in two kinds. Lossless WebP keeps every pixel exactly, and so does the PNG made from it: the conversion loses nothing. Lossy WebP has already been compressed; the PNG keeps exactly what it shows, artefacts included, but can’t bring back detail the website’s encoder removed.

Transparency carries over. A logo or sticker with a see-through background stays see-through in the PNG, with the same soft edges, because both formats store a full alpha channel.

Animated WebPs are converted to a still PNG of their first frame. Expect the PNG to be larger than the WebP; that’s the cost of a format every program can open.

How to convert WebP to PNG3 steps, all on your device

  2. Nothing to set. PNG is lossless, so there is no quality slider. Transparent backgrounds stay transparent.
  3. Download the PNGs. Save each PNG, or Download all as a ZIP, ready for an editor, a slide or a document.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. PNG has a full alpha channel, so transparent and half-transparent pixels come through exactly as they were in the WebP, soft edges included.

Why is the PNG larger than the WebP?

WebP compresses better than PNG, by about a quarter for lossless images and far more when the WebP was lossy. The PNG is the same picture in a less efficient but more widely accepted format.

Can I convert an animated WebP?

Only its first frame, as a still PNG. Turning a whole animation into a GIF or video needs a different tool.
