HEIC to PNG
Save iPhone HEIC photos as PNG, a lossless format every editor opens. Good for cutting out, editing or archiving; it works in Safari, and the photos stay on your device.
Drop HEIC images here
Or any JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or HEIC, as many as you like. They become PNG files.
Your images are converted on this device and never uploaded. Location and other EXIF data are removed.

How this works
Method
Each image is decoded by the browser itself (HEIC only where the browser opens HEIC, as Safari 17 and later does: the site ships no HEIC decoder, because HEVC is covered by patents), turned upright from its EXIF orientation, resized if asked, and drawn on a canvas in a background worker, over your background colour for JPG. The browser’s own encoder writes JPG, PNG or WebP at your quality (libwebp where it can’t write WebP). Rebuilt from pixels, the file has no EXIF; if you keep metadata, the original EXIF is copied in with orientation reset and, unless you keep all, the GPS block emptied.

How it’s tested
One worked example for this page is checked by automated tests before every release: given the inputs, the tool must show the expected answer.
Changes
- HEIC now opens only where the browser reads it (Safari 17+), with tips elsewhere; the bundled HEIC decoder was removed because HEVC is covered by patents.
- First version: HEIC, WebP, AVIF, PNG, JPG, GIF and BMP to JPG, PNG or WebP, in batches with a ZIP, metadata removed by default, and nine conversion pages.
When PNG is the better choice for a HEIC photo
PNG compresses without losing anything, so a PNG made from a HEIC holds exactly what was decoded. That matters when the picture is going into an editor for more work: every later save as JPG would otherwise compress an already compressed copy.
The price is size. A photo with fine detail can grow many times over as a PNG, because lossless compression can’t throw away the grain and texture that lossy formats discard. If you only want to share or upload the photo, HEIC to JPG is the better pick.
Some iPhone shots carry extra pictures inside the HEIC file, such as the depth map behind Portrait mode. Only the main photo is converted. Transparency doesn’t come into it: camera photos are opaque, so the PNG is too.
Where your browser supports wide colour, the photo’s Display P3 colours are mapped into sRGB, the colour space a PNG is assumed to use when it doesn’t say otherwise.
Good to know
- PNG is a lossless format: decoding a PNG gives back exactly the pixel values that were stored. Source: W3C: Portable Network Graphics (PNG) Specification
- HEIF images can carry auxiliary images, such as depth maps and alpha planes, alongside the main picture. Source: ISO/IEC 23008-12, Image File Format (HEIF)
Open-source code inside, loaded only when needed: JPEGs are encoded with MozJPEG, PNGs packed with OxiPNG and WebP written with libwebp where the browser can’t. Pictures, HEIC included, are decoded by the browser itself. Licences and source
How to convert HEIC to PNG3 steps, all on your device
- Open the photos. In Safari, drop your .heic or .heif files here, or tap Choose images. HEIC photos from Android phones work too.
- Choose a size if you need one. PNG photos are big. Under More options, scale them down or fit the longest side, say 2,000 pixels, to keep the files manageable.
- Download the PNGs. Save them one by one or as a ZIP. Each PNG has exactly the pixels the converter decoded, with nothing lost on saving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC uses lossy HEVC compression, which discards detail you can’t easily see; PNG keeps every pixel exactly. A photo’s natural grain is hard to compress losslessly, so a much larger file is normal. Resize the photo under More options if the file is too large.
Is HEIC to PNG better quality than HEIC to JPG?
The PNG is an exact copy of the decoded photo, while a JPG at quality 90 loses a little more detail. In a viewer you will rarely see the difference; it shows when you edit and resave many times, or zoom in on fine texture.
Can I convert HEIC to PNG on Windows?
Not on this page in Edge or Chrome: neither opens HEIC photos, and the page has no HEIC decoder of its own, since the HEVC compression inside is covered by patents. On Windows, Microsoft’s HEIF Image Extension with the HEVC Video Extensions lets the Photos app open the photo and save a copy. Or convert on the iPhone or Mac in Safari, then move the PNGs across.
