WebP to JPG

Turn .webp images saved from the web into JPGs that every app and upload form accepts, several at a time, without sending them anywhere.

Your images are converted on this device and never uploaded. Location and other EXIF data are removed.

How this works

Method

Each image is decoded by the browser itself (HEIC only where the browser opens HEIC, as Safari 17 and later does: the site ships no HEIC decoder, because HEVC is covered by patents), turned upright from its EXIF orientation, resized if asked, and drawn on a canvas in a background worker, over your background colour for JPG. The browser’s own encoder writes JPG, PNG or WebP at your quality (libwebp where it can’t write WebP). Rebuilt from pixels, the file has no EXIF; if you keep metadata, the original EXIF is copied in with orientation reset and, unless you keep all, the GPS block emptied.

How it’s tested

One worked example for this page is checked by automated tests before every release: given the inputs, the tool must show the expected answer.

Changes

  • HEIC now opens only where the browser reads it (Safari 17+), with tips elsewhere; the bundled HEIC decoder was removed because HEVC is covered by patents.
  • First version: HEIC, WebP, AVIF, PNG, JPG, GIF and BMP to JPG, PNG or WebP, in batches with a ZIP, metadata removed by default, and nine conversion pages.

Getting a clean JPG out of a WebP

Most WebPs on the web are lossy, like JPG, so this conversion goes from one lossy format to another. Each lossy save loses a little more, which is why a high quality setting is the default: at 90 the JPG matches the WebP closely, and you can still lower it for a smaller file.

JPG has no transparency. Where the WebP is see-through, such as a cut-out product shot or a logo, the converter paints the colour you pick underneath, white unless you change it. Half-transparent edges blend into that colour smoothly instead of turning black or jagged.

The JPG is often larger than the WebP it came from, because lossy WebP files are a quarter to a third smaller than comparable JPEGs. That doesn’t mean quality was added; it’s the same picture stored less efficiently, in a format nothing will refuse.

An animated WebP becomes a still JPG of its first frame.

Good to know

Open-source code inside, loaded only when needed: JPEGs are encoded with MozJPEG, PNGs packed with OxiPNG and WebP written with libwebp where the browser can’t. Pictures, HEIC included, are decoded by the browser itself. Licences and source

How to convert WebP to JPG3 steps, all on your device
  1. Add the WebP images. Drop them here or tap Choose images. Product photos, banners and screenshots all work.
  2. Pick quality and background. Quality 90 keeps the picture looking as it did. If the WebP has a transparent background, choose the colour that fills it (white by default).
  3. Save the JPGs. Download them one at a time, or all together as a ZIP.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to a transparent background?

It is filled with the background colour you choose, white by default. Pick black, your brand colour or anything else under Background. The list marks every image that had transparent areas filled.

Which quality should I choose?

Keep 90 for pictures you will look at closely. 75 to 85 is plenty for the web or an email and makes noticeably smaller files. At low settings, edges and smooth gradients start to show blocky artefacts.

Why do websites use WebP if apps don’t open it?

Every current browser displays WebP, and the smaller files make pages load faster. Saving a picture to use elsewhere is the uncommon case, and that’s where converting to JPG helps.
