JPG to PNG

Save JPGs as PNG when a site or app asks for PNG, or before you edit a picture several times. The conversion happens on your device.

Your images are converted on this device and never uploaded. Location and other EXIF data are removed.

How this works

Method

Each image is decoded by the browser itself (HEIC only where the browser opens HEIC, as Safari 17 and later does: the site ships no HEIC decoder, because HEVC is covered by patents), turned upright from its EXIF orientation, resized if asked, and drawn on a canvas in a background worker, over your background colour for JPG. The browser’s own encoder writes JPG, PNG or WebP at your quality (libwebp where it can’t write WebP). Rebuilt from pixels, the file has no EXIF; if you keep metadata, the original EXIF is copied in with orientation reset and, unless you keep all, the GPS block emptied.

How it’s tested

One worked example for this page is checked by automated tests before every release: given the inputs, the tool must show the expected answer.

Changes

  • HEIC now opens only where the browser reads it (Safari 17+), with tips elsewhere; the bundled HEIC decoder was removed because HEVC is covered by patents.
  • First version: HEIC, WebP, AVIF, PNG, JPG, GIF and BMP to JPG, PNG or WebP, in batches with a ZIP, metadata removed by default, and nine conversion pages.

What changes, and what doesn’t, in a JPG to PNG conversion

Converting a JPG to PNG doesn’t improve it. The PNG stores exactly what the JPG decodes to, including any blockiness the JPG already had. What you gain is that nothing more is lost: you can edit and save the PNG again and again without each save compressing the picture further.

Expect a larger file. JPG was small because it discarded detail; PNG has to keep every pixel, so a photo can grow several times over. For a website or email, the JPG is usually the better file to send.

Phones store many photos sideways with an EXIF tag saying which way is up. The converter turns the picture upright before saving, because a PNG made this way has no EXIF to carry that tag, and the image would otherwise appear on its side.

A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG starts fully opaque. To make the background see-through, open the PNG in the photo editor and erase or mask it.

Good to know

Open-source code inside, loaded only when needed: JPEGs are encoded with MozJPEG, PNGs packed with OxiPNG and WebP written with libwebp where the browser can’t. Pictures, HEIC included, are decoded by the browser itself. Licences and source

How to convert JPG to PNG3 steps, all on your device
  1. Add the JPGs. Drop the .jpg or .jpeg files here, or tap Choose images.
  2. Resize if needed. Under More options you can scale the pictures or fit the longest side to a size, for an avatar or an icon.
  3. Download the PNGs. Save them one by one or as a ZIP. Each photo is turned upright using its EXIF orientation first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does converting JPG to PNG make it better quality?

No. It can’t restore detail the JPG discarded. It only stops any further loss, which helps if the picture will be edited and saved many times.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No; a JPG has no transparency to carry over, so the PNG is opaque. Use the photo editor’s eraser or mask on the PNG to remove a background.

Why did my photo turn the right way up?

Many phone photos are stored sideways with a note in their EXIF data saying how to turn them. The converter applies that turn, so the PNG looks the way the photo looked in your gallery.
