How to convert km/h to mph
Divide the kilometers per hour by 1.609344, or multiply by 0.621371, which is the same thing rounded. The divisor is exact because the mile is defined as 1,609.344 m; its reciprocal is an endless decimal, so 0.621371 is good to six figures.
A German Autobahn advisory speed of 130 km/h: 130 ÷ 1.609344 = 80.78 mph. A 50 km/h town limit, standard across much of Europe, comes to 31.07 mph, so it is a little stricter than the 30 mph limit in British towns.
Weather forecasts in Canada and Australia give wind speed in km/h, so the same division turns a 90 km/h gust into 55.92 mph.
miles per hour = kilometers per hour ÷ 1.609344 (≈ kilometers per hour × 0.621371)
- One kilometer per hour is 1,000 m in 3,600 s, or 0.2778 m/s; one mile per hour is exactly 0.44704 m/s. Source: NIST SP 811, Appendix B.9: conversion factors by quantity.
How to estimate km/h to mph in your head
Halve the number, then add a tenth of the original back on. 120 km/h: half is 60, a tenth is 12, total 72; the exact answer is 74.56, so you are about 3% under. For a closer figure, multiply by 6 and drop a digit: 120 × 6 = 720, giving 72, then add 2 or 3 for every hundred.
Memorise three pairs and interpolate: 50 km/h ≈ 31 mph, 100 km/h ≈ 62 mph, 160 km/h ≈ 99 mph. The last one is handy because 160 km/h is almost exactly 100 mph.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is 100 km/h in mph?
100 km/h is 62.14 mph. It is a common limit on highways in Canada and on rural roads in many European countries, and the standard benchmark for car acceleration times (0–100 km/h).
Is 0 to 100 km/h the same as 0 to 60 mph?
Not quite. 100 km/h is 62.14 mph, so a 0–100 km/h time is always a little slower than the same car’s 0–60 mph time. 60 mph is 96.56 km/h.
How do I convert pace in min/km to min/mile?
Pace is the inverse of speed, so multiply instead of divide: a 5:00 per kilometer pace is 5 × 1.609344 = 8.05 minutes, about 8:03 per mile.
