How to convert mph to km/h

Multiply the miles per hour by 1.609344. That number is the length of one mile in kilometers, and it is exact: the international mile is 1,609.344 meters by definition. An hour is an hour on both sides, so only the distance part of the speed changes.

Take a 45 mph rural road: 45 × 1.609344 = 72.42 km/h. A 25 mph school zone works out to 40.23 km/h, which is why it feels close to the 40 km/h zones used in many metric countries.

Speedometers on cars sold in the US and UK show both scales, with km/h as the smaller inner ring. If you rent a car abroad, the outer numbers are the ones the road signs use.

kilometers per hour = miles per hour × 1.609344

How to estimate mph to km/h in your head

Add half, then add another tenth of the original. For 60 mph: half of 60 is 30, a tenth is 6, so 60 + 30 + 6 = 96 km/h, against the true 96.56. The “times 1.6” shortcut is accurate to about half a percent, close enough for any speedometer.

A rougher version for driving: 30 mph is about 50 km/h and 60 mph about 100 km/h. Both are slightly low (48.3 and 96.6), so if you hold the round metric number you will be going a touch faster than the mph figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast is 70 mph in km/h?

70 mph is 112.65 km/h (70 × 1.609344). On a dashboard marked in km/h, that sits just past the 110 line.

Is kph the same as km/h?

Yes. kph, km/h and km·h⁻¹ all mean kilometers per hour. The SI way to write it is km/h; “kph” is an informal abbreviation common in news reports and sports.

Why multiply rather than divide?

A mile is longer than a kilometer, so covering a mile each hour means covering more kilometers each hour. The km/h number must come out bigger, which multiplying by 1.609344 does.
