How to convert grams to cups

Divide the grams by the weight of one cup of that ingredient. A European recipe calling for 300 g of all-purpose flour needs 300 ÷ 125 = 2.4 cups, which in practice is 2 cups plus a scant half cup (or 2 cups and 6 tablespoons).

Sugar is denser, so the same weight takes less room: 150 g of granulated sugar is 150 ÷ 200 = ¾ cup. A 225 g block of butter is 225 ÷ 227 = 0.99 cup, close enough to one cup or two sticks.

Expect awkward decimals. Round to the nearest measuring cup or spoon you have; one US tablespoon is 1/16 cup, so a leftover 0.06 cup is about one tablespoon. Recipes from countries that use a 250 mL metric cup need a slightly smaller number of US cups for the same volume.

cups = grams ÷ grams in one cup of the ingredient

How to estimate grams to cups in your head

For flour, divide the grams by 125, which is the same as multiplying by 8 and dropping three zeros: 300 g × 8 = 2,400, so 2.4 cups. For white sugar, halve the grams and drop two zeros: 150 g becomes 0.75 cup.

Butter is nearly one cup per 225 g, so 100 g is a little under half a cup (0.44). For anything else, picture a cup of water at about 236 g and ask whether the ingredient is lighter (flour, oats, cocoa) or heavier (honey, salt).

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cups is 500 g of flour?

About 4 cups of all-purpose flour (500 ÷ 125). If you spoon flour very lightly, closer to 4¼ cups.

How many cups is 100 g of sugar?

Half a cup of granulated sugar (100 ÷ 200). The same weight of powdered sugar fills about 0.83 cup.

Why does my converted recipe come out different?

Cup weights are averages. Humidity, how finely an ingredient is milled and how the cup is filled all move the number. If a recipe was written in grams, a kitchen scale reproduces it far better than cups.
