How to convert grams to ounces

Divide the grams by 28.349523125, the number of grams in one avoirdupois ounce. That is the ounce on US food labels, postal scales and kitchen scales; it is one sixteenth of a pound.

A 250 g block of butter or packet of pasta works out to 250 ÷ 28.3495 = 8.82 oz. A 500 g bag of flour is 17.64 oz, a little over a pound (16 oz). Small amounts give small numbers: 5 g of yeast is only 0.18 oz, which is why recipes in ounces switch to teaspoons for leavening.

Do not confuse this with fluid ounces, which measure volume. 250 mL of water weighs about 250 g, or 8.8 oz by weight, but fills 8.45 US fluid ounces.

ounces = grams ÷ 28.349523125 (≈ grams × 0.035274)

How to estimate grams to ounces in your head

Divide by 30, then add a tenth back. For 250 g: 250 ÷ 30 is about 8.3, and a little extra brings you to roughly 8.8 oz, which matches the exact 8.82. Dividing by 28 is closer if you can manage it: 250 ÷ 28 ≈ 8.9.

Two anchors are worth memorizing: 100 g is about 3.5 oz, and 1 kg is about 35 oz (just over 2 pounds). Everything else can be scaled from those.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many ounces is 100 grams?

100 g is 3.53 oz. Nutrition labels in the US often round a 100 g reference to 3.5 oz.

Are dry ounces and fluid ounces the same?

No. A dry (weight) ounce is 28.35 g; a US fluid ounce is a volume of 29.57 mL. They only line up for liquids about as dense as water, and even then not exactly.

How do I weigh gold in grams and ounces?

Precious metals use the troy ounce, 31.1035 g, not the 28.35 g kitchen ounce. A 1 oz gold coin therefore weighs about 31.1 g; this converter uses the everyday avoirdupois ounce.
