How to convert kg to lbs
Divide the kilograms by 0.45359237. That number is the legal size of the pound in kilograms, fixed in 1959 when the US, UK and Commonwealth countries agreed on one international pound, so the division gives an exact result. Multiplying by 2.20462 gets the same answer to five decimal places, and is easier on a phone calculator.
Take a person who weighs 85 kg: 85 ÷ 0.45359237 = 187.39 lb. US scales usually show whole or half pounds, so that reads as 187.5 lb, or 187 pounds 6 ounces if you split off the fraction (0.39 × 16 = 6.3 oz).
Heavier items work the same way. A 23 kg suitcase is 23 × 2.20462 = 50.71 lb, which is why so many luggage limits are quoted as “23 kg / 50 lb”: the pound figure is rounded down to a friendly number.
pounds = kilograms ÷ 0.45359237 (≈ kilograms × 2.20462)
- The international avoirdupois pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilogram, so 1 kg is 2.20462262… lb. Source: NIST, SI units: mass.
How to estimate kg to lbs in your head
Double the kilograms, then add 10% of that doubled number. For 85 kg: double is 170, ten percent of 170 is 17, and 170 + 17 = 187 lb. The true value is 187.4, so the shortcut lands within half a pound at body weights and is off by only about 0.2% in general.
If you only need a rough idea, “double it” alone is about 9% low: 60 kg doubles to 120 lb against a real 132 lb. Fine for a gym plate, not for a medicine dose.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many pounds is 70 kg?
70 kg is 154.32 lb, or 154 pounds and about 5 ounces. Doubling (140) and adding a tenth of that (14) gives 154 in your head.
Is a kilogram exactly 2.2 pounds?
No, 2.2 is a rounding. One kilogram is 2.20462 lb. Using 2.2 makes 100 kg come out as 220 lb instead of 220.46, which matters for shipping invoices and lab work but not for a bathroom scale.
Why does my scale show a different number in pounds?
Most digital scales round to the nearest 0.1 or 0.2 in each mode separately, so switching units can move the last digit. The underlying factor is the same everywhere: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg.
