How to convert mL to fluid ounces
Divide the milliliters by 29.5735 to get US fluid ounces. The US fluid ounce is 1/128 of a US gallon, and the gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, which makes one fluid ounce exactly 29.5735295625 mL. Dividing by that full number is exact; 29.57 is close enough for any drink or bottle.
Take a 330 mL can: 330 ÷ 29.5735 = 11.16 US fl oz, a little less than a 12 fl oz can. A 750 mL bottle works out to 25.36 fl oz, and a full liter to 33.81 fl oz.
If the recipe or label is British, use the UK fluid ounce instead. It is smaller, 28.4131 mL, so the same 330 mL is 11.61 UK fl oz. The converter shows both, because “oz” on its own does not say which one is meant.
US fluid ounces = milliliters ÷ 29.5735295625 (≈ milliliters × 0.033814)
- For nutrition labels, US rules round the fluid ounce to 30 mL; the defined US fluid ounce is 29.5735295625 mL, 1/128 of a 231-cubic-inch gallon. Source: 21 CFR 101.9(b)(5), FDA nutrition labelling.
- The UK (imperial) fluid ounce is 28.4130625 mL, one twentieth of an imperial pint, so it is about 4% smaller than the US fluid ounce. Source: UK Weights and Measures Act 1985, Schedule 1.
How to estimate mL to oz in your head
Divide by 30, then add a pinch. 30 mL is the rounded fluid ounce that US nutrition labels use, so dividing by 30 lands within about 1.4% of the real answer. For 330 mL, 330 ÷ 30 = 11, and the true figure is 11.16.
For round numbers, remember that 100 mL is 3.4 fl oz and 1 liter is about 34 fl oz. Halve or double from there: 500 mL is about 17 oz, 250 mL about 8.5 oz.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many ounces is 500 mL?
500 mL is 16.91 US fluid ounces (500 ÷ 29.5735), or 17.6 UK fluid ounces. A half-liter water bottle therefore holds a little more than a US pint, which is 16 fl oz.
Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce of weight?
No. A fluid ounce measures volume and an ounce (avoirdupois) measures mass. For water they are close, since 29.57 mL of water weighs about 29.5 g and an ounce of weight is 28.35 g, but oil, honey or flour differ a lot. Use grams to ounces for anything on a scale.
Why does my bottle say 16.9 fl oz?
Because it was filled to 500 mL. In US fluid ounces that is 16.907, which labels round to 16.9. A 1 liter bottle is labelled 33.8 fl oz for the same reason.
