How to convert liters to gallons
Divide liters by 3.785411784 to get US gallons. The US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, and since the inch is exactly 2.54 cm, that comes to exactly 3.785411784 liters. Multiplying by 0.264172 does the same job.
A 60 liter car fuel tank holds 60 ÷ 3.7854 = 15.85 US gallons. A 200 liter rain barrel holds 52.83 US gallons, and a 1,000 liter tank about 264.
The British imperial gallon is a different, larger unit of 4.54609 liters. Fuel economy figures from the UK use it, so the same 60 liter tank is only 13.2 imperial gallons. Check which gallon is meant before you compare miles per gallon between countries.

How to estimate liters to gallons in your head
Divide by 4 and add about 5%. A US gallon is a little under 4 liters, so a quarter of the liters is a slight underestimate: 60 ÷ 4 = 15, plus 5% gives 15.75, against a true 15.85.
For imperial gallons, divide by 4.5 instead, or take two ninths: 60 × 2 ÷ 9 = 13.3, close to the true 13.2.
