How to convert KB to MB

Divide kilobytes by 1,000. A 2,400 KB scanned document is 2.4 MB, so it fits under a 5 MB upload limit with room to spare.

If the size came from a Windows file listing, it is in kibibytes (1,024 bytes each) even though it says KB. Divide by 1,024 for mebibytes: 2,400 KiB is 2.3438 MiB. The two answers differ by about 2.4%, which only matters when a file is right at a limit.

Strictly, the SI symbol is lowercase kB; a capital K is common but informal. The binary unit is written KiB.

megabytes = kilobytes ÷ 1,000

How to estimate KB to MB in your head

Move the decimal point three places left: 750 KB is 0.75 MB, 48 KB is 0.048 MB. For an upload form, think of 1,000 KB as one megabyte and you will never be more than a few percent out, whichever convention the site uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many KB is 1 MB?

1 MB is 1,000 kB. One MiB is 1,024 KiB, and Windows writes that as 1,024 KB.

Is 500 KB bigger than 1 MB?

No. 500 KB is 0.5 MB, half a megabyte. Any size under 1,000 KB is less than 1 MB.

How do I make a photo smaller than 200 KB for a form?

Reduce its pixel dimensions or save it as a JPEG at a lower quality setting, then check the size again. 200 KB is 0.2 MB, so a typical phone photo of several megabytes needs to shrink by a factor of ten or more.

My file is 25,000 KB. Will it pass a 25 MB email limit?

It is exactly 25 MB in decimal units, so it sits right at the limit. Email encoding also adds about a third to attachments in transit, so compress or share a link instead.
